Why We’re Excited About Alcohology

Carroll County’s Alcohology Tour is something that residents and businesses can be excited about. It highlights the incredible energy behind Carroll’s alcohol industry, along with the amazing restaurants, shops and thriving communities that call Carroll County home. Several people and businesses have come together to make the Alcohology Tour possible. Here’s what they had to say.

“This project will help us, Templeton Rye, Iowa Legendary Rye and Carroll Brewing Co.  to promote our businesses and products within the county and throughout the region. The Alcohology Tour will also be a big asset for tourism in Carroll County. As a family winery, we love the process of cultivating our vineyard and making wine. This tour allows us to share more of what we love, while encouraging people to become a customer, enjoy a glass of wine and stay for a steak dinner at Baratta’s,” said Della Lappe of Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery.

“The Alcohology Tour will bring more brand awareness to Iowa Legendary Rye. We have a fun story to tell, and sharing the history is part of the process. Afterall, not many companies got their start with a bootlegging grandma!” said Mike Long, Director Regional Sales & Distribution at Iowa Legendary Rye.

“We thought this was a great idea from when it was first brought to our attention. Alcohology will be a great way to entice people from all over to come to Carroll County, Iowa. With this people can experience so many different types of alcohol’s, from beer to wine to whiskey. We will be taking it to events and tastings all over the state of Iowa to encourage people to come check out what we have going on here,” said Chase Prebeck, Hospitality Manager, Templeton Rye Spirits.

How You Can Support Alcohology in Carroll County

We encourage everyone to support Alcohology in Carroll County by taking the tour, learning about Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery, Templeton Rye, Iowa Legendary Rye and Carroll Brewing Co. Each is located in a fantastic property, offers tastings and the opportunity to experience the magic of alcohology in Carroll County.

“The Carroll County Chamber and locals have been so supportive over the years, visiting our winery, eating at our restaurant and spreading the word,” said Della Lappe. “The Alcohology Tour is one more way, locals can help Carroll County businesses to grow, while also creating more opportunities for everyone in the county.”

Chase Prebeck added, “We think that the people of Carroll County will love this piece. It is a great way for locals to check out these different facilities they maybe haven’t had a chance to see yet or would like to visit again. The tour is also a great way to learn about the history of our county and how it was a destination for a lot of different reasons over the last 100+ years.”

Alcohology Tour Launched in Carroll County

Picture

Carroll County, Iowa has launched a local Alcohology tour spearheaded by the Chamber in conjunction with local breweries, distilleries and wineries. The Alcohology tour was designed to bring awareness to the fine alcohol artisans who create everything from locally brewed beer, small batch whiskey and aged wine. No matter what your taste is, you are sure to find something that you love here.

The Carroll County Alcohology tour takes guests on a journey through Carroll’s charming communities and quaint downtowns. Experiencing the community is part of the excitement, and so is discovering Carroll’s hidden gems like one-of-a-kind boutiques and farm-to-table restaurants. Along the tour, guests will visit Templeton Rye, Iowa Legendary Rye, Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery and Carroll Brewing Co.

Templeton Rye

History buffs, whiskey aficionados, tourists and daytrip adventurists can all find something to enjoy on the tour of Templeton Rye. Guests get to be in the heart of the action – peeking into imported stills, hearing the whir of the fermenters and visiting with employees on the bottling line. The museum is equally impressive and provides a truly innovative and interactive experience. The tasting room offers samples of Templeton Rye’s world class, premium, 6-year signature reserve, available only in the gift shop. Stylish and unique swag, including apparel, cocktail specialty items and more are also available for purchase in the gift shop. Templeton Rye has received many significant accolades in the spirits industry, achieved its one-million bottle mark, and shared its spirits across the nation and the world.

Iowa Legendary Rye

Visiting Iowa Legendary Rye is another important stop on the tour. Each run of Iowa Legendary Rye is created in small batches, hand-crafted just like grandma use to make. Using the recipe that one of Templeton, Iowa’s original bootleggers, Lorine Sextro, used when her family farm was home to a closely guarded secret distilling operation, Iowa Legendary Rye is mashed, distilled and bottled on site in Carroll. The rye grain is grown right here in Carroll County by local farmer, Brian Irlbeck. The stills have been custom built based on old-school technology, giving Iowa Legendary Rye an authentic rye taste. Each bottle is hand labeled and individually numbered so you know exactly which barrel aged your one-of-a-kind bottle of rye.

Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery

Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery is located in downtown Carroll and a popular destination for wine lovers. A family owned and operated winery, Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery was established in 2005 when an old car dealership was converted into a Tuscan winery. When visiting, you can taste over 30 different wines ranging from dry to sweet, big bold reds to light and fruity whites inside or relax in the courtyard or in front of one of the fireplaces. Also located in the old Santa Maria Winery is Carroll’s newest steakhouse, Baratta’s, so you can enjoy delicious food in an amazing setting.

Carroll Brewing Co.

Beer lovers will also enjoy the tour and their stop at Carroll Brewing Co. Their taproom is housed in the same building as the brewery and has a 100-seat capacity. The atmosphere maintains much of the character of the historic space with exposed brick, original floors and a custom-built bar made out of 100-year old reclaimed retail pieces. Plus, with 30 draft lines, there’s a beer on tap for everyone. If beer isn’t your style, try some hard cider or local wine.

Puck Enterprises celebrated turning 40 this last July of 2019 in Manning, Iowa. Ben Puck, the President, CEO, and founder of Puck Enterprises, started this company in the late 1970s as a farmer who saw an opportunity to help the Iowa farming community succeed.

Family is at the core of Puck Enterprises

“Family is at the core of who we are, within our company and in our personal relationships with customers. Through decades of hard work driven by family values, we have built Puck on a legacy of innovation and being good stewards of the land.” – Ben Puck (President, CEO, and Founder)

Manning, Iowa was the birthplace of Puck Enterprises, but it has grown into a 5-location business success! Puck Enterprises now has locations in Farley, Iowa, Worthing, South Dakota, Angier, North Carolina, and Osijek, Croatia, as well as their original location here in Manning, Iowa. What started out as a small business in the heart of farm country has now turned into a national and international success story. And it all started here in Manning, Iowa, where the cornfields are overflowing with abundance, in part thanks to Puck Enterprises and their innovative work.

Even though the company has seen massive growth in the past forty years the CEO and employees alike both believe that their maintained success has to do with the people who day in and day out work hard to maintain this success. Employees and management both agree that work ethic in their workforce is the key to their success.

“If you surround yourself with good, hard-working, people, you can accomplish most anything.” – Jeremy Puck (General Manager)

With creativity, innovation, and hard work, Puck Enterprises continues to be a top industry leader in liquid transfer equipment and services. Starting our in the liquid manure field so many years ago, they now have expanded to manufacturing liquid transfer systems to other target industries, such as the oil and gas industry, and more! They have grown into a 5-location business, yet maintain their small town, hard-working mentality. Puck Enterprises is proud to call Manning, Iowa, home, and continues to thrive right here where it all began.

Carroll – The cost to live in Carroll County is lower than the national average, according to Carroll Area Development Corporation (CADC) and The Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER). Carroll County’s Cost of Living Index for the 1st quarter of 2019 is 88.9. An index of 100 is average.

The Cost of Living Index measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services, excluding taxes and non-consumer expenditures. It is the most reliable source of city-to-city comparisons of key consumer costs available anywhere. COLI data is recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau, US Bureau of Labor Statistics, CNN Money, and the President's Council of Economic Advisors.

The composite index is based on six components – housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, health care and miscellaneous goods and services. CADC staff collects pricing on 60 goods and services each quarter. Results for almost 300 urban areas are available at www.coli.org.

New to the Cost of Living Index is the Small Cities Program, which allows cities smaller than 50,000 population the ability to participate. CADC has been looking for a reliable way to report this data for many years. C2ER is the gold standard. No other organization uses locally collected data on such a broad range of consumables for this many communities.

Among the 257 urban areas that participated in the 1st quarter 2019 Cost of Living Index, the most expensive urban area was New York (Manhattan), NY, (232.9). The least expensive urban area was Pittsburg, KS (82.4).

OFFICE OF THE IOWA SECRETARY OF STATE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA RELEASE: Iowa smashes record for most new business filings in a single month

DES MOINES - Secretary of State Paul Pate announces Iowans set a record for most new business filings in a single month during April 2019. Pate’s Business Services Division processed 2,326 filings for new businesses in April. The previous one-month record was 2,204, set in March of 2018.

The news comes while Iowa is celebrating Small Business Week and coincides with recent reports that Iowa is the best state for jobs and maintains one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation.

“We're seeing small businesses flock to Iowa because we have an environment that I think is very inviting,” Secretary Pate said. “We have low interest rates, we've seen low unemployment numbers, but it's the entrepreneur who's stepping up and getting the job done.”

Iowa is also on pace to shatter the record for new business filings in a year, for the fourth consecutive fiscal year. More than 20,000 new businesses have filed with the Secretary of State’s Office since July 1, 2018.

The implementation of Fast Track Filing by Secretary Pate in 2018 allows new businesses to register with the state in just a few minutes. Previously, the process could take up to three weeks.

“Our office’s goal is to operate at the speed of business, not the speed of government,” Secretary Pate added. “We need to be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and that's what we've done by putting online filing and fast tracking in our offices.”

A graphic showing new business filings in Fiscal Year 2019, compared to 2018, through April is available for your use by clicking here.

Secretary Pate’s quotes and additional comments are available in audio form for your use by clicking here.

The Carroll Area Development Corporation is the Go-to Resource for Business Incentives and Support

5/8/2019

Businesses in Carroll County, Iowa can take advantage of several programs designed to help their business grow. The Carroll Area Development Corporation is the go-to resource for information on these programs, connections to regional partners, and access to capital. Established businesses, entrepreneurs and those considering relocating to one of our growing communities are invited to contact the CADC to learn about available resources and opportunities. In the meantime, here are a few of the ways the CADC and our regional partners are helping businesses grow.

Revolving Loan Funds are available in Carroll County

Local businesses can apply to receive loans ranging from $5,000 to $300,000. These revolving loan funds are available to businesses making investment in the region. These loans typically work in conjunction with a traditional bank loan, providing opportunities for borrowers to receive more loan funds or to make a lesser down payment. Applicants must contribute a minimum of 10% of the total project cost, far less than with bank financing alone.

The revolving loan fund was created to assist new or existing businesses with development and expansion. The funds may be used for land acquisition, expansion, building construction or renovation, equipment, inventory and working capital. The business must leverage other financing first as the RLF program is intended to be used for gap financing. The program aims to create or retain jobs.  Therefore, all applicants must include information on jobs to be created or retained by the proposed project.  Read this fact sheet to learn more about the lending criteria.

One Carroll County business who has received revolving loan funds is Photography by Fiscus. The Region XII Development Corporation was able to assist Jacob Fiscus with the purchase of a new location on Main Street in Carroll so that he could grow and expand his business. His photography business is action-oriented – taking pictures of youth sports players, for example. In addition, he has an artistic side that required a full studio. Click the link below to watch a video on the company or click to learn more about Photography by Fiscus.

  • Des Moines Area Community College
  • Iowa State University CIRAS
